What is a Shirt?
Let's start pretty broad; what exactly do we mean by “shirts”? A shirt is a long- or short-sleeved garment, usually made of woven fabric such as cotton, linen, or synthetic materials. The shirt has a collar, a button closure at the front and a straight or rounded hem. Originally designed as an undergarment, the shirt has evolved over time to become an indispensable part of both formal and informal attire. Shirts come in a variety of styles, such as the classic shirt with a single breast pocket, the formal shirt with French cuffs and the casual shirt with a button-down collar. Below is one of The Garrison's most popular shirts, the Cavani slim fit shirt white.

Why is it called a shirt?
The word “shirt” refers to the fact that shirts were originally designed to be worn over an undershirt or other undergarment to protect the skin and the more expensive outer garment. Over time, shirts have evolved into a more versatile garment, suitable for both formal and casual occasions. However, the designation 'shirt' has stuck and is still used to designate this type of garment. In the vernacular we often call it a “blouse”. The term 'shirt' can also be seen as a distinguishing feature from the undershirt, which is worn closer to the skin and often has a simpler design with no collar or button placket.
When do you wear a shirt?
Shirts are versatile garments suitable for many occasions. Here are some situations where a dress shirt is the perfect choice:
Business Meetings: For formal work environments and business meetings, a smart shirt in combination with a suit or blazer is an ideal choice. In this case, solid colors, subtle patterns and a good fit are essential for a professional look.
Casual events: For casual occasions, such as dinner with friends or a weekend outing, casual button-down shirts with bold patterns and more relaxed fits are an excellent option. Combine them with comfortable jeans or chinos for an effortlessly stylish look.
Festive Occasions: At weddings, gala parties or other formal events, wearing a French cuff shirt and a tuxedo or a suit is an elegant and sophisticated choice. In this case, classic colors such as white, light blue or ivory are often the best options.
Work environment with casual wear: In a work environment with a more relaxed dress code, opt for a shirt with a bold pattern or bold color to showcase your personal style. Combine this with smart trousers or dark jeans for a balanced look.
Shirts are therefore suitable for almost any occasion and can be easily adapted to the desired style and dress code. By experimenting with colours, patterns and fits, you can always find the perfect shirt for every situation. At The Garrison, we are happy to help you with this. How do you recognize a good shirt?
Recognizing a good shirt can sometimes be difficult, but by paying attention to a number of specific features, you can easily judge the quality. First, the material is important; a quality shirt is often made of high-quality cotton, such as Egyptian or Sea Island cotton. The weave also plays a role: look out for fine weaves such as twill, poplin or herringbone. The stitching should be tight and even, with about 8 stitches per inch. The fit is also crucial: a good shirt should be comfortable, with sufficient room to move at the shoulders and a slim, fitted cut around the waist. Finally, the collar, cuffs and buttons are important details.
What do you wear with a shirt?
The shirt is a versatile piece of clothing that can be effortlessly combined with different outerwear and accessories to create a unique look. Here are some ideas for wearing your shirt in different ways:
Blazer: A classic blazer can enhance the formal character of a shirt, which is ideal for business or formal occasions. Choose a blazer in a contrasting color or subtle pattern to create an interesting visual effect.
Sweater or cardigan: For a more casual look, wear a sweater or cardigan over your shirt. This creates a layered effect and keeps you warm during the colder months. Make sure the collar of the shirt is visible above the sweater or cardigan for a streamlined look.
Tie or bow tie: Depending on the occasion and your personal preference, a tie or bow tie can add an extra touch of elegance to your shirt. Experiment with different materials, patterns and knotting techniques to match your look to the occasion.
Accessories: Cufflinks, pocket squares and tie clips are some of the accessories you can wear to give your dress shirt a unique touch. They are especially suitable for formal events and can add a subtle hint of personal style.
Denim or leather jacket: For a more edgy and contemporary look, wear a denim or leather jacket over your shirt. This works best with casual shirts and can create an interesting contrast between the different materials and styles.
Waistcoat: A waistcoat can add a stylish and formal touch to your dress shirt, especially when worn with a herenpak during formal occasions. It can also create an interesting layering effect with more casual outfits.
By playing with different outerwear and accessories, you can take full advantage of the shirt's versatility and tailor your look to your personal style and the occasion.
Shirts FAQ
At The Garrison, we often get questions about shirts from customers. That is why we have listed the most frequently asked questions for you.
What size shirt do I have?
Determining the correct size for a dress shirt is essential to ensure that it fits well and feels comfortable. To find the perfect size, there are some important body measurements you should consider. Start by measuring your neck circumference: place a tape measure around the widest part of your neck, just above your collarbones. Add about 1-2 inches here for a comfortable fit. Then measure your bust at the widest point, keeping the tape measure horizontal and parallel to the floor. Make sure you are relaxed and breathing during the measurement.
Then measure the waist circumference at the narrowest part of your waist, just above your navel. Finally, measure the sleeve length from the center of the back of your neck to the shoulder, then down to your arm to determine the desired cuff length. Keep in mind that shirts come in different fits, such as slim fit, regular fit and loose fit, so it's important to know which fit best suits your body shape.
Don't forget about the size charts and size recommendations on our website, as sizes may vary by brand. By following these steps, you'll be well on your way to finding the shirt that's perfect for you. The size chart is added to each product.
What color shirt with blue suit?
Choosing the right shirt color to pair with a blue suit can elevate your outfit and refine your overall look. In general, there are some classic color combinations that work flawlessly with a blue suit. A white shirt is a timeless choice that is always stylish and elegant, whatever the occasion. It contrasts beautifully with the blue suit and is versatile enough to attend both formal and casual events.
Light blue shirts are also a popular option as they complement the shades of blue in the suit and create a harmonious look. They are ideal for office situations and more corporate occasions. For a more daring and contemporary look, opt for a striped or checked shirt in soft pastel colors such as pink, lavender or light green. These colors add a touch of personality to your outfit without being overpowering.
When choosing the right shirt, it is important to take into account the color of your shirt tie, shoes ,and accessories. Make sure the colors and patterns are well coordinated to create a cohesive and sophisticated look.
How do you iron a shirt?
Ironing a shirt correctly is important to look neat and tidy. By following the steps below, you will achieve a wrinkle-free and perfectly ironed shirt.
Preparation: Make sure your iron is set to the correct temperature, usually indicated on the label of the shirt. Fill the iron with water if you want to use the steam function.
Collar: Start ironing the collar. Open the collar and iron the back side first, from the center to the edges. Turn the shirt over and then iron the front of the collar.
Cuffs: Open the cuffs and iron the inside of the cuff followed by the outside. Avoid ironing over buttons and make sure to smooth the corners of the cuffs.
Shoulders: Place one shoulder over the narrow end of the ironing board. Stroke down from the top of the shoulder and repeat for the other shoulder.
Sleeves: First iron the sleeve on one side of the seam and work your way down from the shoulder. Turn the sleeve over and iron the other side of the seam. Repeat for the other sleeve. For an extra neat finish you can make a light fold at the top of the sleeves.
Front and back: Iron the front and back of the shirt in sections, ironing from top to bottom. Try to iron over the buttons as little as possible.
Finish: Immediately hang the shirt on a clothes hanger and close the top button to keep the collar tidy. Let the shirt cool down and dry before wearing or storing it.
By applying this technique, your shirt will always look professional and wrinkle-free, making a great impression on any occasion. That's what we stand for at The Garrison.
How do you fold a shirt?
Neatly and efficiently folding a shirt is important to prevent wrinkles and creases. Lay the shirt face down on a flat surface. First, fold the sleeves in so that they are parallel to the length of the shirt. Then fold one side of the shirt to the center, followed by the other side so that the side edges meet in the center. Finally, fold the bottom of the shirt up, folding it in half. Your shirt is now neatly folded and ready to be stored without unwanted wrinkles.
